mathsticks Points

mathsticks pointsThe mathsticks points system is there to help encourage all our users to contribute to the mathsticks site.

When you first register you receive 20 'Welcome Points', and further points are gained by participating in the site:

  • 2 points* for each comment you make.
So, the next time you use one of the mathstick maths resources, tell us about it.Sharing ideas has always been good... now there's even more of a 'point' to it!
  • 1 point* for voting on other members comments
  • If other members think your comment is useful they may vote for it (give it a 'thumbs up); this will earn you an additional 5 points.
  • I also often give away an arbitrary (but useful) number of points for particularly helpful comments.

  • 10 points* each time you refer a new user to the site.
Go to your Your Account page, and you will see a short web address (it will look something like: http://www.mathsticks.com/referral/xxxxxxx), give this address to your colleagues, copy it into an email, or add it to Facebook (or whatever)... When your colleague uses this specific address to register with mathsticks, they will earn 10 points for you.
  • 10 points* for every new user that you invite to the site and a further 10 points when they accept the invitation!
Use the Invite a friend link near the end of the top navigtation bar.

mathstick badges are also displayed on any comments you make - these are related to the number of points you have; see mathstick Members Rank for more details of this.

IMPORTANT POINT

Of course, we can't all just accumulate points pointlessly -- we can spend some of them!

Points are used (deducted) for each file you download; 1 point per file.

Simple maths example:

You join, download five resources, write three comments and refer two friends
(20 points  -  5)  +  6 points  +  20 points      = 41 points

* - Points were increased to this level in October 2011

FAQs

What's the point of the points?
To encourage active participation (comments and referrals), and to discourage mass downloading of all the resources.

Do the points have any monetary value?
No.

Will there be a prize for the person with the highest number of points?
We gave away some special resources in December 2010... and may do something similar at a later date - keep watching the site!

What if I want to download something but I've run out of points?
You'll have to do something to earn yourself a couple of points... harsh, I know!

Won't people just add nonsense comments just to get lots of points?
Maybe some will - but all comments are moderated and only the meaningful and useful ones will be added to the system (and therefore generate points)

Why doesn't the comment I've written show on the page?
Firstly, thank you for your comment. Secondly, all comments are read and moderated by Admin (see above) before they will be posted... give it a few hours (or, if Admin is busy, a day or two).

I've just downloaded a resource - why hasn't my points total changed?
This is automated so should happen instantly. However, at busy periods the points total on the main web pages will only be updated every few minutes or so. The points on your Your Account page, are updated more frequently - if you want to see the total more quickly you can log out and log back in again... but it's probably easier to wait. ;-)

Cover up addition to 10

Brilliant game. I used this with a Y6 pupil with dyscalculia and he really enjoyed it. It's hard to find KS1 objective material which is appropriate for the top of KS2 and this is perfect. Brought in all sorts of other vocabulary such as vertical, horizontal and diagonal.

addition- crosses and noughts

(addition- crosses and noughts)its a wonderful game we can add more fun to it. after children have decided who will take crosses and who will take noughts instead of separating the cards, put all the cards (well shuffled) in the centre. children will take the turns and pick the cards, they will solve the sum but they can add their cross or nought only if they have got the respective card. tell them its a game of luck and intelligence.

General

Some excellent resources. It would be really useful if you could see the instructions how to play / or use each resource before you "buy" and if the unstructions were included as part of the download. Be so much easier to print off the resource with the instructions rather than have to do it separately. Great Site! Keep the ideas coming.

Newteach, that's a goog

Newteach, that's a goog point. Some of our resources do include instructions on the pdf download - particulalry where a game has a number of different adaptations. We probably tended to do this more frequently with our earlier maths games and resources. However, we can easily duplicate the instructions, so will take your thoughts 'on board' for future material.

Thank you for the great

Thank you for the great resources. I will have a 90 minute block of math time next year (compared to my usual 45 min.). I am looking for meaningful activities to introduce, extend and engage my students. I was impressed by the number of resources you have for older students. Many will be perfect for math centers. There are so many resources for math centers for younger students. I appreciate that your materials meet a broad range of ages and abilities.

SEN class

Your resources are brilliant for my KS4 Entry level class because they are so visual but not too childish . Lack of support staff means I can also set up some games/activities for them to work on in small groups while I do one to one with pupils. Thank you

number bonds

I have just downloaded the flash cards to support the our work on numberbonds . Myself [FS2] and the year 1 teacher are trying to build up resources that our 2 classes can work together with. I think the domino game higher/ lower will work a treat to encourage the link. Thanks, Will let you know how it goes. We have our classes next to each other and are focussing on how we can teach together and involve the children as learning supports for each other when there are obvious links.

Points

The site's great, and the resources I've looked at so far look good too. I'd agree with those who said the points system needs to be clearer at sign-up. I've lost quite a few on mine already having a look around because I didn't realise my account was limited in such a way.

Sue, thank you for your

Sue, thank you for your comments. We are about to make some changes to the layout and design of the site for the New Year, and will take all of the comments 'on board'. The points system is/was initiated purely as a bit of fun. I regularly give points away to any who ask (cue... bagfulls of requests). I'll add some to your account as a thankyou.

Share circle 5X table

I really like the idea of this game to practise multiplication especially as it can be played by a group or an individual. Is there any chance of other times tables please John. Thank you.

More Timese Tables

Thank you for the kind feedback. The short answer to you question is "Yes". I am planning on adding more times table games to the Share Circle family... it's just finding the time to do it!

But now it has been requested I'll move it up the 'to-do' list.

Fab resources

Your website is fantastic. I wanted to start a maths games morning with my year 1 children and was finding it hard to prepare and get lots of resources to keep them busy and this website has just done it for me! Also its get when you have work experience or parent helpers, to give them something more exciting to do with the children other than listening to children read - as I'm sure lots of us are guilty for that...he he Thank you mathsticks

Thank you

@pavanabhay, Laura, anniemac, beck81uk, Thanks for the comments. I'm consistently excited by the response these resources get. It is very good to know the patience and work put into publishing items here is so appreciated. @beck81uk - I like the idea of parents and TA's supporting children with the activities/games - for me it's always been about promoting collaborative learning, good use of vocabulary and purposeful talk... there's no better recipe. Thank you one and all! John
